The “Tapa” jewellery series is inspired by the rich cultural heritage of barkcloth in Pacific Island cultures. Tapa is a traditional textile made by pounding the inner bark of trees such as the paper mulberry. Known by different names across the islands—ngatu in Tonga, kapa in Hawaii, and siapo in Samoa—it is widely used for clothing, mats, and ceremonial decoration. I have incorporated its organic textures and traditional patterns into the jewellery design to reflect the natural beauty, raw aesthetics, and artisanal spirit of Tapa.
This series also pays tribute to the Pacific women who have tirelessly preserved and passed down the art of Tapa making. Their resilience, craftsmanship, and cultural dedication have been essential in keeping this tradition alive.
To further honour the strength and grace of women, I have included design elements inspired by the Tagimoucia flower, the national flower of Fiji. Rare and beautiful, the Tagimoucia symbolizes femininity, endurance, and uniqueness. Through this symbol, I aim to celebrate the power of women and the enduring connection between culture, nature, and identity.
